Food insecurity is a complex problem, and reducing barriers to food access isn’t as simple as putting up food pantries or creating government nutrition programs, according to advocates and researchers.
While many causes of food insecurity are known — for instance, low wages, lack of access to transportation and other socioeconomic factors — recent research is shedding light on why those available for government food benefits often aren’t taking advantage of the help.
