WORCESTER — When Janice B. Yost got a call in 1999 from some city she had never heard of in Massachusetts asking if she was interested in helming a new health foundation, she was a bit surprised.
“I wonder where Wor-chester is,” Yost recalled thinking, emphasizing the common mispronunciation Wednesday in her tidy Southern drawl.
An Army brat who had made her bones for decades in South Carolina, where she became the first woman to assume leadership roles at multiple educational and health care organizations, Yost had a gift for the grant development process.
