Earlier this year, Worcester Interfaith, the Worcester Branch of the NAACP and group of individuals plaintiffs filed suit in federal court alleging that Worcester’s method of electing School Committee members is unfair and in violation of the Voting Rights Act.
The suit alleges that the current at-large electoral system does not allow for neighborhood or ethnic and racial diversity. The plaintiffs are correct. While people of color make up 40% of our city’s residents, over the last six election cycles and out of 36 open seats, only one has seat has been held by a person of color.
