The two candidates for District 5 City Council, Matt Wally and Paul Franco, have radically different ideas on what to do about the city’s split property tax rate.
The difference became apparent at the Worcester Research Bureau debate Thursday night where the two went back and forth in several bouts. The split tax rate sets a heavy rate for commercial property in an effort to keep residential properties lower. In Worcester, the split is $33.98 per $1,000 assessed value for commercial property. For residential property, the rate is much lower, at $20.61.
