At the conclusion of School Superintendent Maureen Binienda’s presentation Wednesday on “The First 100 Days” of her tenure, replete with tables and charts of events and statistics of where we are now and the road ahead, the superintendent began to read from a document, “A Compact for Public Education in Worcester.”
A “compact” in Massachusetts carries a special resonance. It was the Mayflower Compact, after all, that began everything here in Massachusetts. Signed by travelers venturing to a new world who found themselves landing far off course in Massachusetts Bay, in unchartered as well as uncharted lands, who pledged together a system of self-governance for the common good in order to survive an uncertain future.
