WORCESTER — Rex W. Tillerson, chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil, offered more than 1,100 Worcester Polytechnic Institute graduates a bit of advice yesterday that he received from a mentor as a young engineer more than 30 years ago.
“Just remember that a pat on the back is only 18 inches from a kick in the behind,” said Mr. Tillerson, whose choice as commencement speaker sparked controversy among a small group of WPI students and faculty who were critical of ExxonMobil’s environmental record.
