WORCESTER – The Worcester Regional Research Bureau has taken steps to encourage the public to weigh in on the walkability of their neighborhoods.
The bureau, an independent organization focused on regional public policy research, released a brief this week on walkability in the Worcester area. The brief describes the concept of walkability, which focuses on five factors that help decide if a neighborhood is walkable.
The factors include safety issue, such as having marked crosswalks, speed limit signs and enforcement, pedestrian crossing signs and separation of pedestrians from traffic. Walkability also takes into consideration security features that allow pedestrians to feel free from any intentional danger or threats. These include well-lighted walkways, traffic lights or stop signs at intersections and, in some circumstances, law enforcement or security cameras in the area.
