WORCESTER – Shelter, clean water and food: These are the familiar necessities for those fleeing chaos in Syria.
But researchers visited Worcester State University Wednesday evening to discuss another key to survival for refugees: their cellphones.
“It’s a product and a real reflection and enabler of globalization, but it is also increasingly incumbent for refugees to use in order to find aid,” said Madeline Otis Campbell, an assistant professor in the Urban Studies Department at Worcester State University. “People talked about their cellphone as as vital as food and water … and this was a radical difference from previous refugee situations I have studied.”
