While it is common knowledge that the city’s demographics are changing, the change is more starkly represented in its schools, where the nonwhite population has increased by nearly 50 percent in the past two decades.
As noted in a recent brief by the Worcester Regional Research Bureau, Worcester public school students speak 92 languages. Almost 32 percent are unable to perform ordinary classroom work in English and many live in “linguistically isolated households.”
