Like lemmings blindly running toward the abyss, members of the Massachusetts House of Representatives rushed into a major expansion of state-sanctioned gambling. With a minimum of debate, no public hearings or up-to-date research, they approved two casino resorts and thousands of slot machines at race tracks. Casino developers, investors and other gambling interests quickly followed with their own mini-stampede, eager to cash in — which is not surprising because they are the only ones who make real money on this deal. The gambling industry is America’s most predatory business, one that profits from the financial losses of its clients. It uses sophisticated technology and marketing strategies to trap and hold gamblers.
