It’s no secret that Worcester, like the rest of Massachusetts and the country, is seeing rising housing costs, but for renters, who make up the majority of the city’s residents, those struggles are even higher.
A report released Monday by the Worcester Regional Research Bureau revealed that between 2010 and 2020, the rate of renters who are cost-burdened by housing and related costs has risen by 5.9%, while the rate for homeowners has decreased significantly, by 27.1%. In 2020, more than half of renters were cost-burdened. Disproportionately affected are residents in lower income brackets, as well as residents of color.
